Project Postweg: Art Along the Way

The Alliantie Foundation and the municipality of Rheden are interested in developing projects that investigate the social aspects of and along the Postweg route. The contribution of approximately 30 student participants chosen from the DAI, ABK, EMLA will be instrumental in determing the course taken by the municipality in the future. The consortium of teachers from ArtEZ and Public Space Arnhem initiated the 4-day workshop in which students from the colleges could participate, developing plans and projects along the old 'pony express' route.

Introduction to the Postweg
The term Postweg describes a ten kilometer stretch of road from Velp to Ellecom, a route formerly used to transport the post between Arnhem and Zutphen. The Postweg connects the towns Velp, Rheden, De Steeg, Ellecom en Dieren and lies within the municipality of Rheden. The meandering Postweg is parallel with the highway A348 and traverses a transitional territory bordering the Veluw (nature conservatory and Nat'l park) and the banks of the river Ijssel. The municipality wishes to increase the safety of the Postweg by decreasing the speed of the traffic, especially at the points of entrance/exit of the towns along the way in addition to increasing the identity of the the region as a whole (city branding). This is a sizeable project that encompasses (the design of) traffic thresholds, roundabouts, shoulders, traffic islands, bicycle paths, parking lanes etc... The goal of the ArtEZ 4-day workshop is to develop art in the public domain projects utilising the following factors: the Postweg, the unique nature of the villages along its route, and hopefully incorporating the design of these traffic elements.
