The Project
In January 2004 the Dutch Art Institute (DAI) Dept. of Art in the Public Domain launched a project for all DAI students. Titled Design Your Own Academy in Roombeek, the project would provide the opportunity for students to build models of their ideal DAI in the burrough of Roombeek, an area currently undergoing reconstruction.

Design Your own Academy in Roombeek offered DAI students the possibility to acquire knowledge about experiments both utopian and pragmatic by other visual artists designing architecture and other interventions in public space outside of their official discipline.

By asking the students to design their own academy the project endeavoured to help the students develop insights into the implications of cultural enterprising in an area with a dramatic history and great ambitions for the future.
The Results
Design Your own Academy in Roombeek resulted in a series of lectures and an exhibition of the student's models in the Balengebouw in Roombeek from the 25th of June until the 12th of July, 2004.

The exhibition was titled
Programma van Eisen (This time it's private) and included work from DAI students, Johan Akkerman, Tom Beterams, Sjanet Bijker, Margit Driehuis, Sara Erzfinke, Thomas Hascher, Jan Jonker, Hong Rongman, Anne Schiffer and Kor Smeenge as well as DAI lector Emo Verkerk.
