Dear Caroline
I just read your document about the waste water project and I would like to get in touch with you I am a Swedish artist and I am soon going to Babayan Culture House 4-18 September. The Swedish Embassy is paying my ticket and I will be a part of the Art Eco Project in Ibrahimpasa. I will make a temporary site specific water installation. I am hoping for a collaboration between fine art and technology. My ideas are yet quiet open. Hope to hear from you soon. Best wishes Tina Eskilsson

this is very interesting......it seems there is a world wide problem of water management...from the hot desert climates of Africa....to the ice plains of the Artic Canada.....this is really strange for me.....as one would think 50 years ago these problems would be addressed...because these problems probably did not happen all of a sudden.....also too....in canada...in the media ...i have not heard of this.....and further that in politics.....the politicians do not seem to discuss this.....in a way ....i knew that canada actually has a really bad track record with the envrioinment...and pollution...yet i dont want to beleive this..or accept this.....this is humiliating....that our government can not find solutions.....and act in a way in accordance with nature....because....for many canadians the land...is our identity.....historically it ...the landscape....has always been a part of our culutre.....we ( settlers) were fur hunters....and explorers.....and nature rellliant culture.....we fished...we hunted....we farmed....in a vast and beautiful landscape....now we have very little fish.... over fishing......now we have less forests......clear cutting....( also now unfortunately the pine beetle ) .instead of managing our resources.....we over used and exploited them or almost have,.....like America......which should of been an example of how not to work with the environment.....the americans have always been brutally ignorant in this.....wiping out there ancient red wood forests......
and polluting their rivers.......america is one huge "love cannal" in the name of industry and progress......in some ways they had to ...becasue of thier respopnsiblities in WW2.....however i think they could have managed better.......
with this knowledge......i think that art can illuminate the problem...and make people see........and also art can energize people to change......in this i would like to change....
first.....no bottled water.....2 i will buy a refillable coffe/tea cup so when i go to the cafe.....no more wasted cups.......3. i will recycle what i have......first sd cards for my camera......and video tapes......4. not drive as much......5. wash clothes in cold water only....6. turn off lights ..which i have been for decades.......7. save paper......8. not waste food....which i dont...yet its good to think about.......8. write letters to my government...MP's......9. short showers....which i do already.......

Canda was almost in line with the Kyoto Protocal....yet we backed out.....these conservatives are wrong......i wish the LIberals were back in power......however i do understand some environmental change has to be slow......for economic stability.....yet there must be genuine efforts to change our lifestyle........start small i guess......

yes......however, in the context of contemporary times, bottled water is a necessity in Modern Nations, in the sense of the unexpected desire for liquid for the body....i recently saw a female talk show and the guest mentioned an interesting fact.....she use to drink 2000 bottles of water per year.....she reduced that to zero almost by buying aluminumn bottles for water.....several.....and then using primarily water from the tap.....this works.....for the office and around the home.......and in some traveling situations where there is plans.......however, sometimes.....in emergencies it does not always work.... i have been in an airport....and there has been no choice to buy liquids....and my choice was bottled water.....due to the security.....they make it impossible for one to carry into the airport ones own water.....a type of economic conspirousy....as sales of food and liquids are highly increased by this........
profit governs most of the governments and multinationals decisions....and in terms of the multinational....and this is what i found interesting about this eco conscious bottle water company is that 10 percent of a corporations profit is essentialy given to charity....the water crisis.....is actually quite noble in the capitalist paradigm......however it was not as great as VIrgin airlines who i bleive devoted 100 percent of their profit for :safe" plane fuel....some type of bio fuel...now this is a great and honest commitment by a corporation to the environment......i would like the government to embreace this ideology.....as much as possible.....however...there is a danger....and this is extremely important.....as i see more ads..and people talking about the environment.....
as i feel in the media in the last year it has increased 100 fold.....beautiful.....that this desire to the save the earth is so great that .....governments.and multinationals....are exploiting the this desire for profit.......hence this eco friendly bottle water company....is essentially exploiting us for profit......more than saving the earth...that envrionmentalism can be now a manipulation tool....by these organizations......another extreme of this....is technology.....
like the synthesis many types of media into one hand held media....black berries..and cell phones etc....... with internet...and televiosin.....etc.......that one day...in the name of saving trees......the media giant corporations.....in line with a future ....(.probabaly less benevolent government.....i will leave this open to the imagination......perhaps 1984 Orwell style, )....will say eliminate all newpaper print media.....because it saves the trees.....yes this sounds great.....however the loss of print media in public spaces is a direct attack on the free and thinking individual...and the access to print media is a social
imperative...the removeal of print form public spaces is.a disaster for liberation and rights and freedoms of the individual......and a destruction of a culture of "difference" and diversity, into a funnel of a domination scenario and order by techno sscience....and by corporate elites.....and others.......thus......your question of saving water and not using water bottles.....is interesting in this sense as well.. that we are being manipulated by our very environmental beliefs to act in a certain way...also...i have heard that some cities in the states are considering banning bottle water in reference to your point.....and this point you raise, the critique of bottled water, has been in disscussion now for the last year it seems.....and it seems that many people now are tyring to use more tap water.....which i agree...and is great.....however there is one more example for the acceptance of some bottled water.........when i was traveling in India.....i really needed bottled water.....to not get sick from contaminated water......and this is important....in many undeveloped...countries.....and poor nations.....either the water has many different and unsafe bacteria, or in csome cases chemicals from Western companies exploiting thier enviornment....or the traveler....me in this case....is not climatized to that water.....
in such a case ....the bottled water saved me...from sickness.....and i drank two liters a day....it was the summer.....intense 40 degree heat.......thus....bottle water can not be eliminated....but reduced....sounds like a cliche environmentalist response......
and to summerize in defense of the corporations......while sitting in a Paris cafe.....its really great with a cafe au lait ...to have a bottle of Perrier.......
in this sense...controlled consumption....thought out consumption...and a consumption of
moderation is the immediate possible resolution.........

about the bottled water company:
nice, that they spend some of their sales to water crises, but isn't it much more ecological not to drink bottled water at all, but take it from the tap? think of all the energy and resources going into production and shipping of all these bottles.

perhaps, it is not about "being" political, rather it is about a type of engagement into a politcal where particpants and collaborators, in the art, either do not acknowledge the political, or it is a political expressed or accepted on their terms as a subtext.....however, when the manifestation of the potential political in the art and experience of those engaged in the art, is either seemingly not politcal to the artist or participants, or intentionally not addressed, or intentionally denied, or overlooked, because it is in the poetic, or fun, or enjoyable, or in the moment, or social in the conventions of culture and the conventions of the social (or whatever one describes as outside or distanced from the political) , the mask of the politcial is still apparent..... and their lack of understanding of how the poitical functions is very apparent........in this approach is a type of deception of the art, and/or artist and/or particpants,...... .....however, it is a beautiful functional deception (perhaps)...... yet deeper in this notoin of what may be described as the "soft" political, or the "subtextual" political, or the "playful" political..... is that the artist MUST be aware of this, in either the creation of the art, or its representation, - because it is automatically one of the decisions the artist makes in creating the work- and it deserves the artist's attention and intention, unless the artist chooses to let the art create itself, or the artist, or the participant, which is an intention and another matter ( and is still visible in the art as a politic); However the subject - the water, or place, or people, need not be aware of this notion and the political, (possbily ), ...I say possibly, because if the particpants are aware of the political then their responses would be different, and, this may be a type of empowered difference and the art would also have a sense of empowerment or "greater" meaning..... specifically, in looking at some past art made in capadoccia, the artists were either very naive of their actions as political.....in terms of power.....in terms of being the dominant in the relations they were constructing.......or they were putting these notions aside in the name of creating either a type of art that was more of a documentation of their experience in that region, like an artistic tourist,- which does function in some unique ways of empowerment, in some cases, to create a new and socio political history - , or these artist were intent on creating a theoretical "noncolonial" position or statement - which is very obvious and trite in the sense that to deny one's power is hypocritical.... ( the work i am particularly referencing is when the artist gave a group of eight or ten young children in a small village in (capadoccia?) digital cameras to take a limited amount of pictures.......the technology of the digital camera actually functioned as the power of the colonialist, and the children subservient to the technology, they served the camera, the children were a tool of the camera, not visa versa ....if the children were aware of this....the results of the project may have been more dynamic and definately different ......in the sense of being less an exercise of the artist....and more an implementation of the participant.......where the amusement would have been less of eight children in a developing country "given the opprotunity" to use a digital camera....a toy .....and more of eight children "deciding on how to voice" with a digital camera.....a medium ) My point is that sometimes, for the artist and the participant, it is necessary to know of the politcs of the art, even "subtextual" politics, to make art that is not only interesting, but also more honest.
